Tuppence Worth
Artist Statement:
The concept of 'between' - of belonging to neither of two extremes but needing both extremes to exist. What really is between? That is the question.
Tuppence Worth represents a collection of thoughts, strong feelings, memories of past conversations, suggestions, and knowledge collected. But, above all, it addresses questions yet unanswered.
The work shows a pattern, an order, but within that order, is an organised chaos. The over-all pattern suggests DNA strands with the individual elements forming the binary code - on/off. The text and imagery are a slice in time representing our ever working, thinking minds and the space between, as some say, is consciousness itself...'the now' or 'the awareness.'
May 2000
Notes:
Tuppence: two pence: a former United Kingdom silver coin; United Kingdom bronze decimal coin worth two pennies.
The Saying: 'put in ones tuppence worth' suggests - To share one's opinion, idea, or point of view, regardless of whether or not others want to hear it.
Mediums (pl.media): the material/materials from which an art work is made -
in this case, a mixture of 150 tea bags, wax, pistachio shells, permanent ink, gold acrylic paint, mirrors, feather, shell, Blu tack, cotton, card and artists hair.
DNA: deoxyribonucleic acid - the material inside the nucleus of cells that carries genetic information.
This work was first exhibited at 'Cite' - artists studios and gallery on Brown Street, Ponsonby, Auckland. (Which ran for 3.5 years).
The work was purchased by the James Wallace Trust. It was then exhibited at the Auckland Unitech Library in May 2000 and then again at the Pah Homestead, which is run by the James Wallace Trust.
It is now housed within the collection of James Wallace Trust: a charitable organisation, which supports emerging artists.
