I have painted 'Goal' for my oldest son, Kurt.
His rugby league ground on a foggy winters morning is based at Paparoa Park, Howick, Auckland, New Zealand.
A place where he spent many a training session through the week. And on the weekends their team passionately played against their opponents, through rain, hail or shine, enjoying the great team camaraderie.
My son also is a great believer in looking forwards and goal setting.
The rugby goal being set in the fog leaves the question of what those goals may be? They are yet to be defined. We lay tracks in the crisp grassy ground hoping they will go the way we envision our minds eye to see them. We look back and pride ourselves if they have gone well, the way we planned them, but of course there is no certainty at all. These goals may veer off and pleasantly surprise us, taking us to great places we never even imagined. Or through to the other extreme, they can take us to depths that squeeze our souls, where we shake our heads and ask ourselves, how did that happen? I didn't plan it to go that way at all, but it just happened. Forces work away outside and beyond our control. Goals are funny things like that.
We can only do our best and always strive to have good intensions.
