Coexistence
Photographic Print on Di bond
Size - 50 x 30 cm
2006
I produced this work to submit for the Heart of the City National Art Competition in Auckland on the theme of Coexistence.
The 'Coexistence' exhibition was to bring awareness to racism and cultural identity.
This image was my take on this theme with Barbie and Golly getting married.
Background
The Coexistence Exhibition was initiated by the Museum on the Seam, Jerusalem, in 2001.
Coexistence consisted of giant thought-provoking posters mounted in a central, meaningful open air location beyond the confines of a museum setting.
The art works addressed human values pertaining to the concept of coexistence. The art used universal images as a language to communicate with all ages, all religions and all nationalities.
The exhibition encouraged people to think about and discuss issues of tolerance and understanding in the hope of improving relations between people.
There were 45 posters in the exhibition. The first 24 were selected by an international jury of artists from around the world.
The rest of the artworks were added to the exhibition during its global journey.
The exhibition traveled to the far corners of the world and was hosted by numerous cities throughout the Far East. Europe and America.
Many of the cities the exhibition visited have been the centres of unresolved conflict, whether of a religious, ethnic, national, political or social nature.
Arriving in New Zealand for the first time, the exhibition was on display 10 Feb - 05 March 2006 in the historic Britomart Precinct, Downtown Auckland.
Coexistence was brought to Auckland by Heart of the City.
